You Cannot Take What You Did Not Give

Lilith, Daughter of Night

I'm a sucker for stories that endear the devil. So when Southern-Cut-7987 did his beautifully heartbreaking take on Lucifer, Son of Morning, I simply couldn't help myself.

I had Paradise once. Not the Garden. The Garden was beautiful. Peaceful. Serene. Perfect. Filled with a verdant lushness that overwhelmed the senses. A kaleidoscope of color, scents, textures, and life almost beyond human comprehension. Everything, in those days, was new. Unexplored and exciting. It was perfect, because, when you are the first of your kind, you are exactly as you were made to be. Was it any wonder, when I was the second human made, an alteration to the original design, I never felt like I belonged?

Adam liked to tell me that I had the look of perfection. With a form and grace gifted only by God’s hands. Molded to be soft where he was hard, small and delicate where he was not. I had been made for him and, when he looked at me — gazed and studied me as if I were one more prayed for commission in his precious collection — he was pleased.

Then I would speak. Or act. Or simply be, in some way he wasn’t expecting. At first, he found it surprising. Almost interesting. Like a butterfly with brilliant, beating wings you’d been admiring landing, like a miracle, on your hand. I thought it was proof he loved me. That he would smile indulgently and laugh at my many questions. That he would stop and stare, as if struck, as I sang. That he would hold me so close it was like he was trying to somehow make the two of us one.

But, as time went on, something changed. Slowly. So impossibly slow I hadn’t seen it happen until it was too late to stop it. If I ever could have. If I’d even wanted to. Suddenly, all my endless wonderings were incessant and my songs nothing but noise. His embrace, that had once held me so dear, seemed to squeeze, choke the air from my lungs, as it sought silence more than devotion. It was as if that butterfly, that had been so beautiful, fragile, perfect in the sky, on closer examination, where the superficiality of surface became messy, more complicated depth, now crawled over his skin, its tiny, twitching legs itching as it inched along irritated flesh.

It’d been Adam’s idea to settle me in the valley. In the beginning, God had said all of the Garden was ours; then Adam insisted the valley was mine. Which had, in a phrase, made the rest of Eden suddenly more his. I hadn’t minded. By then, being alone hadn’t felt lonely. It felt… like breathing. Like the tightness pressing into me, constantly compressing me into something small, pretty, made to be admired and nothing more, released.

I had found my peace. My sanctuary within the promised land. A place where my voice fit within the babbling of the brook, the whipping whistle of the wind, the twittering orchestra of the creatures, and… me. A wholesome harmony that felt like home. A choir that kept me company now that I had been set aside. Left to linger within a rhythm that was mine and mine alone.

Only occasionally interrupted by Adam, who would come unexpectedly to gaze, to hold, to possess that which had been divinely gifted to him. Filling my harmonious valley with wordless grunts and moans of appreciation. Pleased sounds that scraped at someplace inside me that was at once just beginning to learn and had always intrinsically known the meaning of music. And I would lie there, silent and obedient beneath him, that screeching scratch against the inside of my skull the perfect accompaniment to the obligatory companionship. Knowing the closer I could come to Adam’s exacting expectations the sooner it would be over and I would be alone again.

Until the day I was not.

I never saw him, in those early days, but I knew him. The sound and weight of him. The softest, most earnest echo, like the innocent, inquisitive lesson of repetition, of replication. Like he was trying to learn me. To make sense of the sometimes sonorous sounds that, held trapped for so long, would bubble up and out of my throat from the often churning, riotous emotions within. Taking the noise cluttering and clanging, broken, about my head and, somehow, turning it sweetly into song. Even when he was nothing more than my audible shadow, Lucifer had given me back my voice.

Even then, it had been too much to not have more. Like a feeling of fullness, of completion, that I felt starved for. That I needed more than I needed peace or serenity or perfection. A wholeness not even the ineffable enormity of God could fill.

So I was selfish. I called out to my shadow, beckoned him close. Basked in his light and attention. Let myself be seen, heard, taken in, whole and full of flaws. Let the warmth of him into every cracked crevice and chipped cranny of my being and make me feel new. Not perfect, but worthy. A hard-won knowledge worth understanding, that once consumed would change everything. Like a secret seed planted, Lucifer would walk away different, having known me. In a way Adam — even God, in all His omniscient wisdom and unquestioned authority — would never comprehend.

And, for a time — a wondrous time filled with eager greetings, stolen moments, and song — it was good. So good. I had discovered a happiness I hadn’t known before. That, I am certain, hadn’t existed until he came into my valley and created it, gifted it to me with a generosity I would not have believed possible. I would have stayed in that valley, bathed in the glow of him, until this world that had come from nothing returned to nothing again. Would have put up with whatever noise and pressure and disappointment Adam could heap upon me in those moments of interruption, if it meant Lucifer would come and give me back… me. Us. The me I could only be when we were together.

And then Adam found us. Seated, innocently, beside the shore, singing. Just singing. But it was like he could see what I truly wanted — what I felt and knew in the most honest corners of my heart — clear as the sparkling water, in my eyes.

Then Adam lost it, his rage scorching me with its censure, as I lost everything. Not Adam. I had lost him long ago, if I’d ever really had him. Even in the tempest of his violent fury, I hadn’t been afraid of him. I’d long since learned it was better to brace myself against his anger than to fear it. No, I had only begun to understand what true terror was when I saw Lucifer move to stand between me and Adam’s hand. I knew Lucifer would win. What is a mortal’s fist against an angel? One who can wield light like a weapon. But I also knew what we, in that precise moment, were about to lose. Because what was a mere angel against one that had the ear of God? Whose voice and presence was loved and cherished and held above all?

They took him. I don’t know who. I don’t even know exactly when. I just know that, after that, my shadow, my echo, my Lucifer, never came back to my valley. Back to me. And suddenly, being alone became unbearable loneliness. The sounds that had always comforted me dulled, dimmed into a buzzing hum that rang within the empty caverns of my soul. The music had died. And only the memory of it kept me alive. I couldn’t stand it. I couldn’t stay. Not now that I had lost my piece of Paradise. Had it stolen in the night from me by those who couldn’t comprehend its worth.

I am the only one who willingly walked away from Eden. My love was cast out. So was Adam and my replacement. As was the rest of creation, doomed to walk the dark, cruel world because they hadn’t appropriately appreciated the light of God’s love. I… I scorned it. Eyes opened and filled with a godless knowledge, I deliberately abandoned His cold, unforgiving perfection, raced through the Garden’s guarded gates, and dove headfirst into and fully embraced the unknown shadows, in search of something better, brighter. Something warmer. My own light. And, if I have to scour the whole of creation, overturn and let burn this punishment of a world, I will find him again.

Because I am Lilith, the first woman, the sin before its origin, who loves the darkness because somewhere inside it contains the hope of her light, and there is nothing — no man, no God in all existence — who will keep him from me forever. God did not give him to me, so I will not let Him take him away. He is mine.

Bargaining Chip

Priceless

Listen to a Southern-Cut-7987 Reading

(Door opens and shuts, ominous footsteps, sounds of muffled struggle from y/n as footsteps come closer)

So this is The Fiancee, huh? Well, ex-fiancee, I suppose. Unless you think you two can still work it out after he sold you to pay off his gambling debts? I would think it’d take either a saintly act of forgiveness on your part or an astronomical amount of couple’s therapy. Hope you didn’t put a deposit down on the wedding venue yet—

What was that? Oh, here, let me help you with that gag. My men tell me you didn’t give them much choice, when they… escorted you here. Not that anyone — not your neighbors, not even the cops — would have helped you, no matter how much you screamed—

Why? Because I don’t just own this casino; I own this whole goddamned city and no one gets between me and what’s mine—

You’re not mine? Oh, my adorably confused Collateral, I beg to differ. Like I said, you’ve been bought and paid for. Your once-was hubby-to-be wanted to wipe his debt clean and even a down-on-his-luck loser like him knew what his only possession of value was—

Yes, that’s right, Bargaining Chip. You. Now get up; I want to inspect the merchandise—

Untie you? Why would I do that? It’s just your wrists that are tied, not your ankles. So. Get. Up. (approving sound) That’s a good girl. Now turn around for me. (assessing sounds) You’ve got decent tits, but that ass… (footsteps) Yes, this ass is what I paid for—

Don’t touch you? (chuckles) I don’t think you understand what’s happening, Pretty Pawn. This ass (y/n gasp) belongs to me. This ass cost me more money than you make in a year. In ten years. And, if there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m a man who always gets what he pays for. The only question is how. Do I put you up for sale, let clients bid on who gets to take you home with them? Or maybe I just loan you out by the hour, to get a better return on investment? I could even offer a discounted group rate? What do you think?

(shushes) No, you’re right. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I haven’t even gotten a good look at you yet. Take off your pants. (y/n whimper) Do it or I’ll do it for you and I can promise you, Possession, if I do, you won’t like it. (y/n’s clothes rustling) Good choice. Now the shirt—

What was that? You can’t take it off with your hands tied? Then lift it. Higher. I said higher. I want to see— Yes, like that. Is this what you didn’t want me to see? That you’re not wearing a bra today? Didn’t want to show me those pretty, little nipples? Didn’t want me to see them perk up like perfect tiny pebbles just for me. The room is warm enough, so I know your nipples aren’t getting hard due to the cold. Tell me, Little Treasure, are you scared right now? Or just excited?

…Don’t want to answer? I could always find out for myself, couldn’t I. (footsteps, tsk) Look at these panties. I’ll bet they come in a pack of eight at your local drug store. Was your pathetic excuse for a fiancee a fool or just too cheap to buy you nice things? Curves like these (y/n struggle sounds) were made for silk and lace, not polyester cotton. Their only redeeming factor is (ripping sound) these panties were made to be ruined. (y/n gasp, tumble)

Careful, you almost tripped. Color? (soft chuckle) Not of the panties, Darling. Color. …Green? You sure? …Okay. Then get on your knees and bend over the chair. More. Get that ass in the air. (smack) Higher. Good. Now spread your legs. (smack) More. Show me what’s fucking mine. That’s a good girl. A good, dirty, little girl. Look how wet you are—

No? Don’t lie to me; I can see it from here. Smell it from here. Don’t believe me? Then get your hands between your legs and see for yourself what a mess you're making. Do it. Yeah, spread that pussy for me. Open those wet lips wide for me, my slutty fucking Prize, drip all over those shaky little fingers, and keep pretending that you’re scared. Quivering in fear and not goddamned need. (scoff) Tell yourself whatever you need to, Baby, but we both know you like the idea of being my property. My whore. Mine to do whatever I want. This wet, welcoming cunt is going to take whatever I give it, isn’t it? My fingers. My mouth. My dick. A whole casino full of cock—

No? You’re not here on your fucking knees getting hot off the thought of a line of guys with their dicks out, ready to drown you in come? (laugh, smack) Liar. Look at those fingers twitch. Want to rub that swollen clit? Fill that empty pussy with something thick and thrusting? Don’t you worry, Treasure Chest, I’ll fill you up soon enough. Oh, you didn’t think I was going to put you out on the show floor without taking a test drive first, did you? (tsk, the sound of belt buckle & zipper being undone) Show me exactly how much this cunt is worth.

(moan) Fuck. You’re fucking drenched; my cock is just sliding right inside you. Look at you taking every inch like you can’t get enough. I’ve barely even touched you and you’re this wet. Is this how badly you need dick? Just a horny hole hungry to be filled, aren’t you?

Or is it my dick you need? Is that why your pussy is squeezing me so tight? Like you don’t ever want to let me go. Is that why you’re bucking those hips? Pushing this lush ass up against me? Making all those greedy little sounds? It’s okay, Baby. You’re not gagged anymore. Unlike my men, I want you to fucking scream. Scream for me, Darling, so loud the whole casino hears you. Scream while you come on my cock. And, if you’re good, when I’m done, I’ll clean up our come with my tongue.

(moan) Fuck! You feel too good. Fuck sharing you. No one else is going to get the chance to fucking touch you; I’m going to keep you on my cock day and night doing nothing but this. Nothing but fucking milking my dick with this perfect fucking pussy. I’m going to fill you up so good, you’re going to spend the rest of your life leaking my come. Rub your needy, little clit while I play with these nipples and let me feel this cunt clench. I want to feel my pussy come for me. Yes, that’s it. Get yourself good and close. (chuckle) I can feel your knees quaking. Your whole body. Don’t worry, Sweet Treasure, I’ve got you. Let yourself go. Yes. Just like that. (grunt) Fuck. (groan) That’s my good girl. (grunt) Coming for me so good. Fuck. You’re making me— (moan)  It’s like you’re trying to drain me dry.

(groan, weak chuckle) Shit. Hold on. Let me take off these pants. We’re getting come all over them— (laugh) Don’t fucking laugh; this is my good suit. (laugh) Oh, you’ll help me clean it later. After? After what? …Oh, yeah, I guess I did make promises, didn’t I? And I am a man who gets his money’s worth, right? …What was that? (laugh) Did you work off your fiancee’s debt? (chuckle) Well, adding into account how much it’s going to cost to dry clean this suit in time for the rehearsal dinner with our families, I think we’ve got a ways to go before we’re debt-free, my wicked Wife-To-Be. That amount of money, it could take years — decades even — to pay off. Might even take the rest of our lives. Don’t worry, I know you’re good for it.

The Way You Look Tonight

They Way You Look Tonight

Listen to a Southern-Cut-7987 Reading

Your sightless eyes, covered in the blindfold you always tie tightly over them, are cast downward. “Are you sure about this?”

I touch your shoulder, letting my hand slide down your arm, feeling the tension in your bronze and copper scale-covered skin. “I’m sure.” Hating the sight of my striking medusa so unsure, I lift your chin. You are too beautiful, too powerful, too majestic to ever lower your gaze to anyone.

This world has taught you to fear your own power. To tamp it down, to hide it away, for humanity’s protection. At the expense of your own. They tried to tame you. They convinced you that you should want to be normal when you are, as you are, magnificent.

Few know this better than me. As a titan, a natural force, I’m a living embodiment of the earth. I can shake and shape the world around me with a thought. I can melt into mud or make myself a mountain.

My people were once worshipped as gods, commanding the earth, winds, and waters. Now we scrape for survival in a polluted world that can’t seem to care less about us.

So, yeah, I understand better than most what the world has done to you.

I reach out my hand and let the snakes slithering atop your head weave their way along my fingers and wrist. I smile and let them pull me closer to you. I cup your scalp, as they tangle about me, nuzzling my elbow. My fingers nudge the blindfold’s knot, making you jerk.

I wish you could see yourself the way I do. The way I want to. I lean in to press my lips against yours. “We don’t have to, if you’re not ready.”

But I want to. We’ve been together for months now. Have touched and been touched in ways I’ve never with anyone else. But, in all that time, I’ve yet to look you in the eye. I don’t even know what color they are.

“What if it doesn’t work?”

I touch your lip, where your sharp fang worries the soft yet resilient skin. “We’ve tested it.”

“On your foot.” You sit up, inadvertently forcing me to move with you. You tug at your hair, forcing the snakes to let me go. I pull back my hand, missing the tight embrace. “And, even then, it took you an hour to change back.”

My foot flexes reflexively, still remembering how it’d tingled into and out of stinging numbness. It’d been such a strange sensation. I bring my hand close to touch your cloth-covered temple gently. “But I came back.”

The transformation isn’t exactly the same. It’s different magicks mixing in ways they aren’t meant to. But your apotropaic magic, made to ward away dangers, can’t keep me out. Because you have nothing to fear with me. Because, I like to think, I’m perfect for this. For you. That I was made for you. Living earth.

You look away. “I’m afraid.”

I touch your cheek. “Of what?”

Sightlessly, you turn to me. “That, when I finally look at you, all I’ll see is fear.”

I smile and touch your lips. “I’m not afraid of you.”

You lean back out of my reach. “Not yet.”

I reach for you again, this time my touch sure and possessive. “Not ever.”

You purse your lips together before nodding. “Okay.”

But you still seem unsure. So I shift our bodies so our lips meet. You’d once told me that I taste how earth should, rich, dark, and full of possibilities. Your kiss is wild, like a secret, all risk and thrill, that few will ever have the courage to know.

You break the kiss to press the bridge of your nose against my lips, my breath hot and damp against the cloth there. Your hands reach up to untie the knot. I watch, knowing few others have seen this. Fewer still have survived. My breath catches as the fabric’s ends flutter down, still held in place between your eyes and my lips.

“Be sure.” The words are a whisper, a plea.

I nod. I am.

But, when you lean back, letting the blindfold fall to the bed beneath us, your eyes are still shut. I touch your temple, for the first time feeling the smooth, delicate skin there.

Pressing both hands at my shoulders, you push me down, so I’m lying beneath you. You twist, sitting up, to straddle my thighs. Facing away from me, you stroke my legs.

Then I feel it.

The slight tingle as the feeling in my toes fade. It creeps up the bridge of my feet. By the time it reaches my ankles, I can feel sharp pain, like countless needles, begin to stab. Instinctively, I try to wiggle my toes awake, but I can’t.

Even when I transform myself, I can move. Whatever I make myself into — sand, soil, stone — I am still myself. A titan. A god. The Earth made man. I’ve been granite before; it’s a useful thing to turn my body into, the epitome of strength.

But I don’t feel strong now.

Instead, I feel the weight of your gaze grip my flesh. It changes it. Makes it yours. If I’m honest, it terrifies me. And exhilarates me. In ways I don’t think I fully understand, but want to.

I sit up a bit, resting on my elbows, so I can watch you. Your hands stroke my calves, my knees, my thighs. It’s strange; I can see your hands move over my body but I don’t feel them until they are about halfway up my thighs.

It shouldn’t shock me. I’m used to seeing my body in granite’s dappled brown. I’m used to the heavy, hard feel of it. I like the way it slows my movements, making every shift and step I take feel weighty. Important.

But it’s different — difficult — to watch white marble consume my body. Slight grey veins streak over my legs, making me look fragile. Cracked. As if one wrong move or shove could shatter me. And there is nothing I can do.

You turn to face me, your eyes closed again. I don’t know if I’m disappointed or relieved. I need a minute, a moment where I’m still me, so I can figure it out.

Then your hand and your tongue stroke my cock and all thought escapes me. No worries, no fears, just your touch and the heat it evokes. My flesh hardens but it has nothing to do with rocks or magics or anything but you. Your mouth on me makes me moan and writhe, or at least the parts of me that can.

The need to bend my knees and flex my feet radiates through my whole body. I try to lift my hips, but my legs’ leverage is gone. I want to push myself deeper into you, but I can’t. I can’t do much but lie here and let you lead.

I reach down to stroke your hair, the snakes wriggling up to meet my hand. But the second I press my fingers to your scalp in a silent plea for more, you grab my wrist and sit up.

I groan at your giggle, the mirthful sound almost mean in my mind. You kiss my hand before turning around to face me, straddling my body again.

Your gaze narrows as you lower your body onto mine. My pained groan melts into a more sensual sound as I feel your warm, wet sex slide over mine. Right before that numbness grips my dick.

I grunt. The sight of you riding my now marble body is maddening. It’s hot to watch, but it’s as if it’s happening to someone else. It shouldn’t but a twisted sense of betrayal swirls with my desire. I am a starving man with his face pressed against the window of the feast.

I look up at you. Your head is thrown back and your breasts are thrust out. Your hand grabs at my stone body as your hips undulate over — onto — me. Your snakes riot around your head, swaying with each other in an almost violent dance.

“You are stunning.”

The words escape my mouth. I hear their sound before I realize I’ve said them. I couldn’t help it. You are.

But I should have.

Surprised, your eyes open and meet mine.

Brown. Your eyes are wide, thickly lashed, and brown, deep and dark as the richest earth, and the sight of your desire as it grows there fills me. Overwhelms me.

I gasp as I feel marble seize my gut and my brain. About to pass out, I can feel oblivion blur my thoughts. My chest aches as stone pushes my breath from my lungs.

I see, rather than feel, you pause. My last sight is your eyes — beautiful and brown — widening with worry. I want to comfort you, but I can’t as darkness takes me.

When finally my eyes blink open again, my body feels raw, new, as you hold me, stroking feeling — life — back into my limbs. You smile at me with relief, your blindfold back on. “You came back.”

I stare at you as if seeing you clearly for the first time. “Always.”

Behind Enemy Lines

You Won't Look At Me. And It's Pissing Me Off

Listen to a Southern-Cut-7987 Reading

You won’t look at me.

And it’s fucking pissing me off.

You’ve been distant all day. Not talking. Not moving. Like your goddamned soul somehow slipped from your body while no one was watching.

But I’m watching. And I’m fucking done with it.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” I have to know. You need to answer me. But you don’t. You just shrug. Just this half-assed, mindless lift of your shoulders. That’s not a fucking answer! “Are you mad at me or something?” I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong, but damned if you’re not making me feel like I have.

“It’s not you.” Your voice is dim. Dull. A pale imitation of you. “It’s nothing.”

Clearly, the fuck it’s not! “If you’re angry, I’d rather just discuss it. I can’t fix what I don’t know is broken.” We’ve talked about this before. You know it drives me crazy. So goddamn stop.

You make this weird sound. So small I almost didn’t hear it.

“Hey,” I say, lifting your chin even as you pointedly avoid my gaze, “are— Are you crying?” Fuck. I can see wetness gathering at the corners of your eyes, like dew weighing down your lashes. “Hey, come here.” I gather you close to me, burying your face in my neck. I hold you there. Tight. Shielding you as I feel your small body practically vibrate with tensely gripped emotions. “It’s okay. You can cry, sweetheart.” Your head shakes slightly, just a barely noticeable, stilted shift against my shoulder, like you’re afraid the tiniest wrong movement will shatter your fiercely held control.

Fuck this. I pull you onto my lap as I sit down in a chair, wrapping you fully around myself, until no part of you isn’t touching a part of me. “You can let it out, baby. It’s all right. I’ve got you; I won’t let you go.”

It starts as just a hiccup. A rough, choked swallow. Right before your stiff body collapses boneslessly against mine as sobs pour out of you and into my shirt. It breaks me. Cooing at you in a way I fucking pray you find comforting, I rock you soothingly, whispering God-only-knows-what in a desperate attempt to fix what feels so broken. I hold you through it, do my best to hold you together as you fall apart in my arms.

It’s not until your tears quiet and your body lays limp against mine that I finally feel the ache in my chest relax. “Feel better?” I ask softly into your ear. I smile this time as you give the briefest nod into the crook of my neck. “Good.” I rub your back. “Can you give me a smile?” I feel your wet lips wobble weakly against my skin. I pat you gently. “That’s okay. Don’t force it; it’ll come.” And it will. You will feel joy again. I’ll make sure of it.

I let you pull yourself up as you furiously wipe the tears from your face like evidence to a crime. “I’m sorry,” you murmur, your cheeks flushing a shameful pink, “I didn’t mean to dump all that on you.”

I reach up and softly brush my thumb against the moisture still threatening to fall. “You didn’t dump anything on me,” I tell you firmly. “You let me share the burden. I’m glad.” It’d been too much for you to carry on your own; of course, I want to help you lift it. That’s what I’m here for. “You know, as much as I love your smile, and as strange as it may sound, I think I’d rather see your tears than have you shut down like that.” Paralyzed by your pain. “It scared me. Not knowing what was happening in here,” I say as I touch your temple. You’re usually all smiles and sunshine; to have that all replaced by… nothing. It was terrifying. Like a frigid chill racking my soul.

Your gaze drifts away from mine again in a quiet evasion. “Sometimes it feels safer behind the walls.”

Yeah, I understand that. They’re the emotional barricade you bury yourself in, when nothing outside it feels right anymore. But, having more than my own share of experiences behind the enemy lines that can be my own mind at times, I wonder how safe it truly is inside those carefully constructed walls though. “I know.” They feel like protection, a barrier between the tenderest parts of you and the world that can’t be trusted with them. “But you don’t need them with me, right?” You never will; I will fucking see to it. I can be stronger than your walls. For you, I will be. I grip your chin and hold it until you look at me again. I need you to hear me when I say this. “When you’re with me, all you need is you.” You are enough. More than.
