The craziest adventures always start with a single choice.

You should be in bed. You worked all day and are not ready for something like this.

Yet here you are, standing at the edge of the bar. You should order a drink, while you wait, if just to give yourself something to do besides stare at your surroundings. It’s not that there’s anything wrong or off with the place. With its sleek design, from its shined tile dance floor to its stylish furnishings, it looks like some fancy bar or club.

You suppose it is. Of a kind.

The west coast's most extensive and exclusive playhouse, Donovan's caters to kinksters of all kinds. Here, leather daddies lift drinks with loli littles. Rope tops talk technique with bondage bottoms. Latex fetishists dance and flirt with kilt-wearing Doms. It all looks so normal and yet not. Seems strange and yet curiously comfortable. Nerves crackle within you, an even mix of excitement and anxiety, leaving your brain buzzing and your stomach clenching.

You wander to the back of the club. To the door in the back that seems to draw you near. The bouncer at the door looks up at you and nods, his eyebrow arched as if asking “You coming in?”

But you don’t.

You want to.

You think.

But you don’t. Instead, you just stare, knowing that beyond that door lay playrooms and dungeons full of dark fantasies and decadent nightmares.

You've never actually been, but you've been warned.

Biting your lip, you shuffle your feet and watch a couple, a tall, handsome man with a pretty woman in a frilly blue dress, laugh and walk up to the bouncer. A group of women dressed in neon-colored raver leg-warmers and not much else adjust their costumes as they pass as well.

You look down at your work clothes, feeling out of place in your everyday outfit surrounded by the fantastic. You hadn't had a chance to change; you were already running late. Maybe you should have taken the time.

“You lost?”

You turn. A tall, broad man with a shaved head in a long, black leather coat stands cross-armed beside you. Your eyes widen as you take him in - not just his looks, his massive physical being - but the unignorable, intangible presence of him. The hard look in his black eyes bowing your head in deference. His muscles bunch as he flexes, making him seem even larger. You swallow hard. Then cough. “I'm, um, waiting for a friend.”

He scoffs. “Aren't we all?” He nods pointedly. “Let's see your pass.”

Reach into your pocket and turn it over. Quickly. And pretend your hands aren't shaking slightly.

He looks at the laminated temporary pass you gave him and reads your name there:
